How I Spent My Day Snowed In

Being from Massachusetts, I have had a lot of snow days in my life. But never in my life have I seen a blizzard like the one we had this past Saturday. And coming from someone who hates snow, I actually enjoyed the nor’easter a lot more than I thought I would. I figured that in this post I would do a little snow day recap and tell you all what I feel my snow day essentials are.
First of all, guess who’s back in Rhody! I got back last Saturday and spent the last week trying to settle myself back into the groove of school. After a week of getting up early and trying to find a routine, I was excited to have a full weekend to spend with my friends catching up. However, mother nature seemed to have other plans and decided to drop two feet of snow on us in one day. So my roommates and I gathered our shovels and prepared to be snowed in for the weekend
I feel the need to explain that the part of Rhode Island I am in for school is notorious for losing power during every wind storm we get. Which meant that I made sure I was prepared for the worst. I have only ever lost power once in my life and it was literally the worst. It made me realize just how reliant I am on modern technology and really put it into perspective just how lucky I am to have the things that I have. Anyways, I made sure to go to the grocery store and stock up on snacks, did all my laundry and homework before the storm, and made sure to have all of my devices charged for the big power outage the next day.
And while my preparation was great, I was lucky enough to wake up the next morning with power still on. And to top it all off, the power stayed on the entire day. I think this was just a way of the universe telling me to do my chores before the weekend was over but that’s just my take on it. I woke up and went downstairs to see five inches of snow on the ground. Sarah was kind enough to make Mikayla (our new roommate) and I breakfast. I had a delicious omelet and potatoes with a piece of toast and it was absolutely delectable. We all drank coffee and chilled in our pajamas for a couple of hours either on our phones or finishing up homework.
I ended up getting ahead on a couple of assignments that are due this week while watching the first two seasons of Victorious on Netflix. For those of you who don’t know what Victorious is, it was an old Nickelodeon show that is similar to ICarly or Drake and Josh. It is such a good show and was very nostalgic for all of us to watch back. And for those wondering, yes we did end up finishing all of the seasons on Netflix.
I spent the rest of the afternoon watching the snowfall and drinking hot chocolate. While I love a good day off, I was starting to get antsy. So I decided to spend my time making a series of Tik Toks accusing Sarah of breaking into the house for warmth. I honestly just did it for fun but the videos actually started getting views (30,000 views per video to be exact) and people were genuinely concerned that a random 20-year-old girl broke into our house. Sarah was only mildly offended that people thought that she came in from the street and thought that it was very comical all around. But if you are reading this now I will come clean that Sarah is my roommate and not some crazy person from the street.
In the midst of me bullying Sarah on the internet, she decided to make chili which was (shout out to my dad for this word) phenomenal. If you guys couldn’t tell, Sarah is an amazing cook. She made a vegetarian chili with multiple different kinds of beans, corn, peppers, tomatoes, and onions. I don’t know about you guys but a warm comfort meal like chili is the best meal to have during a blizzard. I absolutely love the vibe of a warm meal on a freezing cold day but I’m sure you all can relate to that one.
After a day of lounging, we all decided it was time to try and shovel our cars out before we lost daylight. Did the snow stop? No. But did we still try? Yes. Granted we didn’t get very far. The snow was up to our knees and the road was not even close to being plowed. I was able to clean my car off and shovel a bit of it out. But we soon realized that it was pointless to continue to shovel while the blizzard was still going so we went back inside and waited until Sunday to finish. And while we are on the topic, I would like to thank Sarah’s boyfriend Alex for coming and helping us shovel. He moved more snow in an hour than we would have done in two. Literally a lifesaver. I would also like to give a special shout out to our friends Gabe and Beckett who showed up to help seconds after we finished but were good company nonetheless.
Halfway through the shovel session, Sarah looked at me and said she wanted to walk down to the ocean. In a blizzard. With very strong winds and ice on the road. Obviously, I said yes. The entire time we were both trying to not fall on our face (Sarah actually did fall on her face but she was okay) and when we finally made it down to the water, it was a bit underwhelming. You couldn’t see four feet in front of you which also meant you couldn’t see the water so with that we turned around and tried not to slip on our way back.
Our post-shovel attempt was met with a movie marathon on Disney+. Our features included Luca as well as Encanto which are both amazing movies even as an adult. Sarah did end up falling asleep but woke up just in time to catch the last 30 minutes of Luca. we spent the rest of the just talking and dreading having to shovel the next day.
While being trapped in the house my first weekend back to school wasn’t my ideal situation, all around I really enjoyed it. I was able to curl up and relax without the many stressors of school or work. Speaking of work, I am currently looking for a part-time job at the moment either in Rhode Island or remote for the semester so if anyone has any options please send them my way.
And that was my blizzard day! I hope you all enjoyed and also had a relaxing and fun snow day as well!
Hope you have a lovely week!
